Wrote a very nostalgic blog post this week on my early Internet days, which were mostly spent visiting and creating websites about Harry Potter.
Added Brennan’s beginner-friendly guide to static site generators to my links page. Check it out if you’re interested in building websites with SSGs, but don’t know where to start.
Made a slight tweak to my media logs page; the date when I add each title to the log is now listed beneath each image.
Still haven’t made any further progress on finding a new home for my website. As much as I hate to say it, I will probably just stick with Cloudflare.
I know, I know … there are plenty of valid reasons to boycott the company, but Cloudflare’s free WAF rules are simply too valuable to me and have no alternative at this time – that I can find, anyway.
I’m aware of Anubis, yes, but I can’t see any way to get Anubis up and running on any of the major free static web hosts; unless I’m mistaken, Anubis is geared towards web developers who have full access to all the standard web developer things that are seldom (if ever) offered by free static web hosts, like nginx and Apache.
Anubis also seems slower than Cloudflare and (in my opinion) has more of a negative impact on normal, non-bot visitor experience.
Life, the Universe, and Everything
Had a lovely evening catching up with some old university friends I haven’t seen in several years – and in a few cases, decades. We are all in or around our 40s, and are still unchanged in so many ways (minus the grey hairs, glasses, laugh lines, joint pain, and the like).
It served as a great reminder to me and my husband that these lovely people still live in our city, and that we need to make the effort to see one another more often. I don’t really know what it is about middle age that makes us want to hunker down in our homes over the weekend, but it doesn’t have to be that way!
Was reminded, yet again, that Hell is other people on Facebook Marketplace.
The ghosting, the insulting lowballs, the irrational anger when asked to meet at a public location for the sale, rather than my own home…
Shows I Watched
My husband and I finished the first season Furious. It was excellent – very much recommended if you’re into crime dramas!
We’re now two episodes into the sixth season of Slow Horses, which is already proving highly enjoyable.
Books I Read
Speaking of Slow Horses, I’m still making my way through Mick Herron’s Real Tigers, the third book the series. I expect to finish it before the month is out.
I definitely won’t be hitting my overly optimistic goal of reading fifty books this year, but at least I’m still averaging one per month.
Games I Played
Control: Resonant came out on the 24th, and I’m loving it so far!
I did have to dial back the difficulty a wee bit with the accessibility settings, but I feel absolutely no shame in that.
At base level difficulty, the enemies are damage sponges, which makes combat feel like a bit of a slog. After increasing Dylan’s outgoing damage and reducing incoming damage slightly, combat feels so much more fluid and less arduous.
I commend Remedy for giving players the opportunity to make the game as challenging or as easy as they’d like it to be; more games need to do this.
