Site Updates
- Currently looking into moving on from Cloudflare Pages, and feeling more than a little overwhelmed.
- The question is, where to go? I do not want to pay for traditional shared web hosting; aetheranne.ca is a tiny 22.5 MB static site that simply doesn’t need cPanel, MySQL, WordPress support, and any of the other advanced web dev tools typically on offer from shared web hosting plans. I simply need a free host that can support a lightweight static site while also providing basic security features (SSL, DDoS protection, etc).
- So many of the free hosting alternatives to Cloudflare also make me uneasy for various reasons. It feels like I have no choice but to either suck it up and pay for hosting features I don’t need, or just accept that free hosting with the features I actually want may come at an ethical price.
- In saying that, Codeberg Pages seems like it could be a viable option for me. 👍 I’ll look into it.
Note: The above section of this post has been substantially revised. I generally try to avoid poking hornets’ nests these days, and some of my earlier statements veered a little too far into nest-poking territory for my own comfort.
Life, the Universe, and Everything
- Wrote a long blog post earlier this week about generational trauma and 9/11, titled “The Day We Watched TV At School.”
- It was basically me remembering the attack as it happened, watching (in a high school classroom, of all places) live footage of people leaping to their deaths and the towers collapsing.
- I ultimately ended up keeping the post in my drafts, as it was a little too personal for me to share online with strangers.
- One thing I do want to share from the post is this article I found via the CDC’s website, which discusses the impact that unrestricted 9/11 footage had on people around my age and younger.
- I think watching the events of 9/11 unfold on television in real time at such a sensitive, impressionable age had a far greater influence on Millennial anxiety (especially in North America) than many of us may realize or acknowledge.
Shows I Watched
- My husband and I finished watching season three of Silo this week.
- The latter half of the season was so much better than the first! I was especially excited to watch the sequence that unfolded at the end of the penultimate episode – it was one of my favourite moments in the second novel, and translated well to screen.
- I’ve failed to mention this in my weeknotes thus far, but I’ve been rewatching The X-Files while working out on my stationary bike.
- I really hate doing cardio indoors (I find it incredibly boring), but doing cardio while watching one of my old cable TV favourites has made it way more tolerable!
And that about does it for this week. If you’re wondering what books I read and what games I played … refer back to my last weeknote, because nothing changed on that front. 😉 I was quite busy with work this week, so I didn’t have much free time for reading and gaming.
